How to use the random cat breed generator
- Select All, Longhair or Shorthair.
- Enter how many breeds you want, then select Generate. For a single breed, select Pick one cat breed.
- Select a breed name to open its page on CFA.
- Select Copy, Download or Print worksheet to keep the batch.
Worked example: a class of 20 is writing about cats. Enter 20, keep No repeats on, and select Generate. Each child gets a different breed, and the next batch skips all 20.
Where the 45 breeds come from
The list is the CFA breed list, copied in full on 25 October 2026: 45 breeds under CFA’s heading “CFA Recognized Breeds”, with each name spelled the way CFA spells it. Other cat registries keep their own lists, so a breed recognized elsewhere may not be here.
The coat length on each card is the one CFA gives the breed. CFA lists 11 breeds as longhair, 23 as shorthair and 11 in both lengths, so the Longhair filter draws from 22 breeds and the Shorthair filter from 34. CFA puts the hairless Sphynx under shorthair, and so does this list.
The photos come from Wikimedia Commons, each under a free licence (CC0, CC BY or CC BY-SA). Each one was checked by eye against its breed, and its photographer is named in the list below. Lykoi and Toybob have no photo yet. The free Lykoi photos on Commons are all smaller than the 800 pixels this site needs, and every free Toybob photo shows a person holding the cat.

Ways to use it
- A class project where each student reads about a different breed and reports back.
- A drawing prompt: draw a breed from its photo, then compare drawings.
- A guessing game: show a photo with the name covered and let the room guess the breed.
- A writing prompt: invent a story about a cat of the breed you drew.
Quick answers
How many cat breeds are in the random cat breed generator?
45. They are the breeds the Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) lists as recognized, copied from its breed list on 25 October 2026.
Does it show a picture of each cat breed?
Yes, for 43 of the 45. Each photo comes from Wikimedia Commons under a free licence, and the photographer is named in the full list. Lykoi and Toybob have no photo yet: the free photos of them were too small or showed a person holding the cat.
Can I draw only long-haired or short-haired cat breeds?
Yes. The Longhair filter draws from the 22 breeds CFA lists with long hair, and the Shorthair filter from the 34 with short hair. The 11 breeds that come in both lengths are in both filters.
Does the random cat breed generator repeat breeds?
No. A batch never contains the same breed twice, and nothing repeats across batches until you have seen every breed in the filter you picked.
